A Prayer of Surrender

A Prayer of Surrender

The word Surrender has been on my heart lately. Mind you, not just the word, but the very act of Surrender. I don’t know about you, but when things aren’t working out exactly the way I like, I have a tendency to analyze and try to figure out how to improve and fix those things. Unfortunately, my first reaction isn’t always to just “surrender” it to Jesus. Somehow, I think I can figure out how to fix it, how to make it all better all by myself.

Recently, I was down on my knees at the front of the church during a prayer time. Our Pastor had called us to come forward, but I don’t actually remember exactly for what.  All I know is that God got a hold of me in those moments and things were illuminated in me that I had never known were even there before. I realized that I wasn’t surrendering or really trusting him with some stuff, either. What an eye-opening experience!

Proverbs 3:5 and 6  “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not depend on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and he will direct your paths.”

When we don’t surrender everything to Christ including our families, our jobs, our homes, our stuff, are we really trusting in Him?

I would have to say no.

Without Christ, we wouldn’t have the opportunity to walk forgiven. We would still be the sinners without the hope of eternal life that we are born as. Nothing you or I can say or do can make Jesus love us more! How amazing! Following a set of rules or not following them, doesn’t make us any more or less loved by God.

So if that’s what God thinks of you or me, what does God think about our families or lives?

I think he wants us to surrender them (our families, our jobs, our homes, our stuff) completely to him. For myself, that means I know that I must let go of “working” so hard to make things happen.

A Prayer of Surrender

Lord, my family is a gift from you.

They have been given to me for a short time on this earth, but ultimately they belong to you.

I choose to give them back to you.

I choose to allow you to do the work in them, instead of me trying to make them be a certain way.

I believe when I do this, I am set free to pray, believe, and declare your Word over them and in this way be led by the Holy Spirit.

Lord, my life is a gift from you.

Thank you, Lord that you lead me a guide me and that your Word says in Jeremiah 29:11“ For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

I know your plans are so much bigger than my plans.

I choose to trust you and give up my plans for your plans.

Lord, I thank you that you promise to supply all my needs (Phil 4:19) and all this worrying and stressing over finances isn’t needed because you promise in your Word that you will look after me.

I trust you to do that and know that you are a God that loves me and wants the best for me.

The best for me doesn’t mean that things won’t go wrong, but I know that if I trust you, you will look after me through every trial that may my way.

Lord, I thank you that I don’t need any more stuff to make me happy.

I thank you that the joy of the Lord is my strength!

I choose to walk in that joy every single day and let go of my selfish pride that says I need such and such to make me happy.

I choose, instead, to focus on following you and serving you with all my heart.

In Jesus Name, Amen.

In Conclusion

When we Surrender our hopes and our cares to God, we can begin to walk in freedom like never before! Freedom doesn’t mean that we will be without troubles and trials, but it does mean that we can walk knowing that our heavenly Father holds us in the palm of his hand each and every moment!
