What to do when you feel like giving up

The other day I felt like giving up on life.  I  had had one of the hardest 24-30 hours I’ve had in a very long time. So, today, I want to talk about what to do when you feel like giving up. For those of you who know me in real life, you know I’m a very positive, glass-half-full kind of girl. Yet Thursday evening I was hit with a huge wave of self-doubt. I went to bed thinking it would be better in the morning. It wasn’t. I was depressed, I was sad, and I just didn’t want to go on.

I questioned my mothering skills.

I questioned why I’m even writing. Does anybody even care?

I questioned my walk with God.

I questioned my ability to Lead Worship.

I don’t have many non-Christian Friends. Am I affecting anyone?

My dear friend, every one of those things are lies from the pit of hell. I bet that most of you reading this blog have faced the same kind of self-doubt that I did. You’ve allowed yourself to believe the lies of the enemy. He’s a crafty fellow, that one. He finds our weakest areas and plants seeds of doubt in our minds. These seeds are placed in our minds like they are our own thoughts. My dear friend, I want to remind you that those thoughts are not your own.

John 10:10 (NIV) The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

I didn’t do all the right things in these moments. That’s not what it’s about. It’s about doing the best we can and learning from our mistakes.

What To Do When You Feel like giving up:

  • Begin to praise Jesus

It’s very easy to sit and wallow in our misery, but I want to remind you that Praise is a powerful weapon. Honestly, the praise didn’t automatically make me feel better. Yet I know that there is such power in Praise that I choose to do it anyway.

  • Call or text someone to wish them a wonderful day

When you do this don’t call them to complain about your day. Instead be an encouragement to them. Make the decision to be the encouragement that someone else needs.

Luke 6:38 (NIV) Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

  • Contact a trusted friend or mentor and tell them about what you are going through

This isn’t always easy to do. We don’t always want to open up to others about our insecurities. My trusted friend offered me incredible life-giving words, that really helped to build me up.

  • Don’t allow your entire day to be ruined by depression

If you have plans, keep them. Do your best to find joy in those moments. Give your worries and cares to God and enjoy your family.

There is power in the name of Jesus. So when you’re in trouble, I encourage you to get into the Word of God. To speak the name of Jesus. To break the power of darkness over your life.
